Captain's Log... Swabbing the Decks
Letter from the Publisher

So many things are going on…where to start today?? I’ve just been jotting down little tidbits all week in the notes on my phone when something funny or profound runs across the vista, but my brain is still back on the county commission meeting and the stories we need to get working on for next week.

It struck me this week how many times in the past year we’ve all written “due to COVID” in a story. Leanna says if she ever writes “according to …” again, I should just end it all for her. I also notice “allegedly” quite often spilling out of my keyboard. The words that become a part of life.

Which leads me to “plank owner.”

We had a Naval Veteran, sworn in at the base in Fallon by Captain Muncie, write us an “atta girl” the other day. He said he is a plank owner who has been with us since the beginning. I had never heard that term, so he explained: When a ship gets commissioned for the first time, all of those personnel who were assigned to the ship at commissioning are plank owners in perpetuity.

I feel like all of you who have been with us since the beginning back in January of 2019, contributing, reading, correcting our proofreading or lack thereof are the official “plank owners” of The Fallon Post. What we’ve all done together – and I say that because this little crew could not have made it without your support, is amazing to say the least. Our very own community paper.

A guy taught me another word this week, “enfeeblement” as in, “the enfeeblement of local papers is bad.” We agree and we appreciate how much you all help us grow every week.

Please keep spreading the word. Make sure all your friends and family know about us. Buy a subscription for a friend for their birthday (thank you, Nancy, what a great idea), and we will be here…

...keeping you posted,
Rachel

Comment author: Patti Cole Comment text: Marie will be forever treasured in memories. The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses. Her dad Ted was my dad's brother. I never knew Ted or Betty, but I wish I did. I am 73 and live in IL. I am building my family tree and see where Betty has fit in. Blessings to you Curt and family.
