Captain's Log... On Having Deck Hands
From the Publisher

Things get a little silly on Thursdays around here – mostly I have not slept in a couple days, the girls are all here, and Vic comes in several times to check on us.

We got a new volunteer this week. Actually, two of them, how lucky are we??? So, the shop is packed full of desks and computers and snacks and a dog. Shelley is our shop mascot. She hates men. Well, really, she hates everyone except Leanna (to whom she belongs). And she sheds. Everywhere. I have this really cool red-carpet rug that lies at the front door and of course that’s Shelley’s favorite place to soak up sun and deposit dog hair.

We also now have a cool little room fountain, a melty wax smelly good thing, some candles, bathroom freshener spray, and I just noticed someone brought a fan. And a fridge! This literally changes everything – we are the big time now.

I have had a dream for a long time to own a company where I could hire all my friends and have a super cool work environment where everyone gets to do what they love the best. We would be surrounded by good music and spontaneous creativity would erupt on a daily basis. I always thought it would be a political consultant business, but this week I realized it is the newspaper. There are seven of us in here right now, it is quiet, and you can seriously feel the inspiration (panic) flowing through the building. It is, for reals, a dream come true.

We are not perfect, and we know we are turning out a fairly rookie product, but we love it so much. We are just trying to do our best and when we get hate mail about our “rhetoric” and little reminders on proofreading we melt into the floor a bit in embarrassment, but we make a reminder and press on.

And when we get notes of support from you, messages of encouragement, sweet “atta girls” we celebrate and post those on the team site for everyone to share and we stack them in our “I love you” pile to keep in the scrapbook or maybe one of these days put in a frame and hang on the wall.

We are definitely experiencing some growing pains this week with the paper. We are also trying to get the magazine out (of course about a month behind). Our wee-baby Viviane may have been correct when she said we do not have the bandwidth, but you know me – ridiculously stubborn. We will get this magazine out and it will be beautiful, even if it comes in December.

Thank you for your patience and we hope you are enjoying our work. We sure enjoy every minute of...

...keeping you posted,
Rachel

We reached out to the writer/submitter and got this info back...hope it's helpful. PBM: Pharmacy Benefit Managers are pharmacies that are owned by insurance companies. (CVS is one.) They negotiate with drug makers to get reduced pricing for medications, but they historically have not passed along those savings to patients. https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/pharmacy-benefit-managers-staff-report.pdf MFN: Most Favored Nation pricing is a policy that means a country agrees to offer the same trade concessions (like tariffs or price reductions) to all member nations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). When applied to pharmaceuticals, it could disrupt global access, deter innovation, and obscure the deeper systemic issues in American health care. https://petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2025/05/22/the-global-risks-of-americas-most-favored-nation-drug-pricing-policy/Comment publication date: 6/23/25, 7:47 AMComment source: L E T T E R TO THE EDITOR
