#WhyYouMatterFallon -- Community Art Project

#WhyYouMatterFallon -- Community Art Project

For the second year running, the Chur- chill County School District and the Chur- chill County Library have combined their #WhyYouMatterFallon craft project efforts. Locals of all ages are decorating flags to showcase their 2021 positive intentions for display in the community.

The #WhyYouMatterFallon project is modeled after Chelsea High School’s project. Churchill County High School Art teacher, Jaime Shafer, learned about their project at the National Art Education Conference two years ago. “They created a model that other schools could use in order to recreate the project elsewhere,” explained Shafer, “I expanded the project to include our community because I wanted to include as many people as possible.”

According to Shafer, the Positive Intention Flag project’s goal is to spread positivity to our community. “We are hoping to hang these in the community if businesses are willing to display them in their windows,” Shafer said, “I will be stringing the flags together and hope to start hanging them in March.” About 100 flags have been returned, with over 1,500 hundred flags out to the schools and community to date.

#WhyYouMatterFallon showcases positive intentions throughout the community, bringing a little light into the darkness. The project helps us look beyond the trials and hardships that can cloud the day and remind us that each person in this community has something beautiful to offer. It also helps us remember the bright light that makes us all individuals — and how much that light is appreciated. Churchill County is a vibrant community, full of variety and contrast. We are all different - different ages, colors, religions, and lifestyles. We may speak other languages or appreciate unconventional art or music. And we all have different hopes and dreams, unique to who we are. To help celebrate that uniqueness and the importance of each and every one of us, contact the library and arrange to pick up your #WhyYouMatterFallon kit to share your positive intentions for 2021 with all.

The library asks that you return the markers with your flag in the provided bag when you drop your project in the library’s book return box in the parking lot. If groups are interested in participating, contact Jaime Shafer at [email protected].

The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses.
