Churchill County School District is offering support classes for parents in our community. Classes are available live, through live streaming on the internet, and/or through recordings available on YouTube.
Innovations and Professional Learning Facilitator, Nate Waite, explained, “Parents are an important part of a child’s education, and we want to do everything possible to be a good team with them as they are helping their kids in traditional classrooms, learning remotely, or whatever.”
To facilitate this partnership, the District has set up a steady stream of support for families. One example of this support is the monthly, usually on the 3rd or 4th Thursday of the month, Family and School Learning Lab. This support is offered to anyone and all questions and comments are a welcome part of the process. This month’s lab will be offered live stream on November 19th from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., and then will be available on YouTube. Due to the increase number of COVID-19 cases, no live meetings will be offered in November and December.
Topics for the labs vary and are designed to build a team atmosphere. In the past months topics such as exploring the District website, Google Classroom, Infinite Campus, how to make a Gmail account, information on the program Edgenuity, and more have been discussed with the hope of increasing the involvement of parents as they gain a comfort and confidence with some of the many changes now faced in education.
The District believes that parents are key components to education and that their comfort and involvement is necessary for the success of the students and that of the District. Family and Community Engagement Coordinator, Robyn Jordan, stated, “We are striving to help families be partners in their child’s education.” Nate Waite added, “We want families to know that we recognize there are a lot of tools and a lot of situations that are very different than in the past... We don’t want anybody to be intimidated or confused about the new things… Everyone is welcome, all questions are welcome.”
