Single vehicle rollover
On Nov. 3 just before 8 p.m., the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single vehicle rollover accident in the 3000 block of Casey Road. The driver of the vehicle, Samanatha Peccorini, 33, a Churchill County resident, was transported to Banner Churchill Community Hospital where she later died. The passenger in the vehicle was also transported to the hospital for medical treatment.

Death at Sand Mountain on Halloween
On Oct. 31 at approximately 12:46 a.m. the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two-vehicle rollover accident with injuries on Sand Mountain. The responding deputy was advised upon his arrival at the scene that the operator of one of the vehicles was deceased.

Initial investigation revealed that a quad and a side-by-side UTV had been involved in a collision causing a rollover near the top of a dune. The deceased was identified as the quad operator, Juan Velazquez Vargas, 32, of San Jose, Calif. The driver of the UTV is cooperating with the investigators.

These two investigations are ongoing and no further information will be released at this time.

Comment author: Patti Cole Comment text: Marie will be forever treasured in memories. The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses.
