Viviane's Reviews - The Right Stuff

Viviane's Reviews - The Right Stuff

TV/Streaming - The Right Stuff

National Geographic and Disney have brought a new series telling a classic story.

Based on the true story, and adapted from the original film, The Right Stuff tells the story of the seven astronauts who raced against the Russians to space.

This interpretation is different from the previous film in many facets. It follows period dress and setting much closer, and inspects the personal dramas of each astronaut and those around them.

This series seems to take the recipe that created Mad Men and apply it to space. The first two episodes feature the selection process and how it affects their wives, passion for flying, and hiding their mistresses.

The one thing similar to this series and the movie before it is the light humor sprinkled throughout. There are brief moments of levity within the personal dramas while the astronauts compete alongside each other during all medical exams to make it on NASA’s short list.

Disney’s streaming platform Disney+ released the first two episodes on Friday, and I cannot say that I was greatly impressed. However, I am intrigued to see how this story is changed or told differently compared to the film and novel before it.

Comment author: Claude EzzellComment text: Paul was one of the most manifest men I have ever met. He was a good friends with my Dad and always had an entertaining story for the occasion. One of my most favorite stories Paul told dated back to the late 60s or early 70s and it revolved around him killing a deer way out in the mountains. Naturally the deer ran down into a deep canyon and died. Knowing that it would take him forever to haul it out he devised an awesome plan. After preparing the deer he drove back to NAS Fallon and rustled up a SAR crew and they flew out and picked up the deer. Of course it was labeled as a training flight but what the hell in those days you could do that sort of thing. Rest in Peace my friend until we meet again!!Comment publication date: 4/11/24, 1:15 PMComment source: Obituary - LCDR Paul N PflimlinComment author: THughesComment text: So sad to hear.
