Seed Packets Available to Community for “Victory Gardens”

Seed Packets Available to Community for “Victory Gardens”
Bundles of three seed packets will go out Thursday in lunches distributed to local students

The Fallon Food Hub and the Churchill County School District are beneficiaries of the generosity of Rail City Garden Center which donated nearly $45,000 worth of seed packets that will be distributed to Fallonites wishing to grow a “Victory Garden” this year.

The school district will be distributing bundles of three different garden seed packets in every bag lunch they distribute this Thursday. The district is serving nearly 2,200 meals to local children, ages 0-18 every day. (Locations for distribution sites here.)

“We are grateful for the opportunity to share with children and families this opportunity to grow something from seed to table,” said Summer Stephens, district superintendent. “Especially in this uncertain time, the ability for kids to learn and explore growing something on their own is amazing.”

In addition, bundles of 10 seed packets can be found in boxes around town at various locations including:

  • The Churchill County Library
  • Chamber of Commerce, Telegraph Coffee
  • I7 Meat & Cattle

Seeds are available now but will go fast, and organizers ask that each family only take one bundle of seeds per household to as many people as possible get a chance to participate. They also encourage sharing family growing projects on social media using the hashtag.

Comment author: Patti Cole Comment text: Marie will be forever treasured in memories. The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses.
