Children ages 4-16 can learn the basics of bicycle and scooter safety during a free safety course Saturday, Aug. 22, from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Rafter 3C parking lot.
The event is being organized by Andrea Cavanaugh and Angela Guthrie of Financial Horizons Credit Union in partnership with the Fallon Police Department, Nevada State Police, and Churchill County Parks and Recreation.
“The timing is perfect, just before the start of the new school year. This event will remind children why bicycle safety is important and how to safely travel to and from school,” Guthrie said.
Participants should bring their own bicycles, scooters, or e-scooters. Free helmets will be available while supplies last, and assistance will be available to ensure helmets fit properly. Children will also have an opportunity to decorate their helmets.
Participants will learn how to complete a safety check on their bicycles, including checking proper tire inflation, reflectors, and chains. They will also learn how to negotiate obstacles and practice safe riding on busy streets and in their neighborhoods.
Representatives from the Fallon Police Department, Banner Health, Nevada State Police, and the Nevada Department of Transportation will be available to help children and answer questions about bicycle safety.
Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and be accompanied by an adult. A signed waiver is required. Preregistration information is available through the Churchill County Parks and Recreation Facebook page.
Children will also be encouraged to navigate the Safety Corral Course set up in the Rafter 3C parking lot. Participants will receive a certificate after completing the safety training and course.
Financial Horizons Credit Union will treat participants to ice cream from the Battle Born Ice Cream truck after the event.
