The Churchill County Board of Commissioners addressed election issues, staffing adjustments, and budget actions during the June 17 meeting, taking up matters ranging from indigent defense to conservation district funding.
Commissioners canvassed the June 9 primary election and reviewed a ballot assignment error affecting 881 Fallon voters. Clerk/Treasurer Linda Rothery said some Ward 1 voters were incorrectly assigned to another precinct. She has sent a request to the City of Fallon to hold a special election, and Rothery said additional auditing procedures will be implemented.
Public Defender Jacob Sommer asked the board to move previously approved staffing changes from October to July, noting his office will assume Fallon Municipal Court indigent defense cases July 1 while temporarily operating with one legal secretary. Commissioners approved the request 2-1, with Chair Getto opposed, and implementation set for July 6.
Commissioners also debated whether Joe Sanford should receive a stipend while serving as interim county manager. Getto and Commissioner Hyde supported additional compensation, while Commissioner Blakey noted Sanford previously agreed to serve without one. A $2,000 temporary stipend was approved 2-1, with Blakey opposed.
A request to grant newly promoted Churchill County Detention Center Captain Brad Kufalk an advanced step placement drew concerns about precedent and policy limits. With no motion made, the request was left unapproved.
The board approved $7,500 for the Lahontan Valley Conservation District and $5,000 for the Stillwater Conservation District for FY2026. Commissioners also ratified the Meals on Wheels Loves Pets grant increase from $12,500 to $15,000 and renewed a salon lease with Sandra Burrell at the Pennington Life Center for $400 per month.
An appeal hearing for George Pomeroy, GP Global LLC, regarding two variance denials, was rescheduled to July 2 to meet state notification requirements.
Commissioners approved several year-end budget adjustments, including transferring $827,858 from the Public Transit Fund to the Road Department for new snowplows and $15,000 from the Building Reserve Fund to establish a new Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act fund. Routine budget and grant adjustments were approved, and Resolution 10‑2026 was adopted to account for higher than expected revenues.
The board discussed a request from the Truckee‑Carson Irrigation District to transfer about 160 acres of tax‑delinquent property into public ownership. Commissioners supported the concept but raised concerns about waiving roughly $4,200 in delinquent taxes. No action was taken.
Commissioners approved a maintenance agreement with the City of Fallon for the future softball complex, an agreement with Silver Sage Development LLC to sell county-owned property at 2255 Casey Road for its appraised value of $425,000 for a proposed hotel project, and software upgrades for the Sheriff’s Office, including RapidSOS and Live911.
Commissioners and staff also provided updates on recent activities. Getto announced he will travel to Washington, D.C., to advocate for continued Payments in Lieu of Taxes and Secure Rural Schools funding. Rothery reported that candidate filing for the sheriff’s race has opened and planning is underway for the Fallon City Council Ward 1 special election.
The next County Commission meeting will be on July 2, 2026.
