Captain's Log - Cruise Control

In this week’s Captain’s Log – Cruise Control, Rachel reflects on lessons from a road trip, celebrating quirks, teamwork, and Fallon Media Co.’s big night at the Nevada Press Association Awards. From Hall of Fame speeches to team wins, it was a reminder of why local journalism matters — and how our crew keeps pushing forward.

Captain’s Log – Cruise Control

I got to go on a road trip last week and my friend let me drive. A car. So weird after driving my big truck all the time.

There was a little lesson on all the bells and whistles and a pointed instruction to use the cruise control so this little car didn’t get away from me and I end up with a speeding ticket.

My response was something along the lines of, “I don’t really like things that hold me back.”

Funny how we recognize silly personality quirks in the path of our day-to-day life.

But as I sat with our scrappy little Fallon Media Co. team at the Nevada Press Association awards ceremony last Saturday night, thoughts turned to that sentiment and I realized its true – about our whole team, and how lucky I am to be surrounded by people who have gotten on that same bus with me.

None of us much like things that hold us back and we’re having the best time ever figuring out how to be “media moguls” as our friends tease us with that catchy little moniker.

We had a great time at the Nevada Press Association conference this year, which was held in Fallon for the first time in almost 30 years. The last time it was here, our Anne Pershing helped host. Ranson and I got to help with arrangements this year and got to know the Press Association people a little better.

Because it was here instead of Vegas and we didn’t have to pay for travel and hotel rooms, we were able to bring much of our team to the events which doesn’t always happen. We listened to the Hall of Fame inductees talk about their impressive careers and we got to meet our peers from across the state.

And we won some awards.

It’s always really nice to be recognized for our work and it’s fun to make sure everyone on the team gets nominated for at least one of the categories. I love that our columnists win, and I love that three of our awards were team awards – not just our writers get recognized but our designers and our logistics crew. Honestly the fact that we get these papers out every week and in addition do these beautiful special sections for graduation and the festival is a minor miracle and would not happen without everyone being so willing to do whatever it takes.

So as we continue to push against all the reins and create a beautiful Oasis in the Rural Nevada News Desert, we’ll always be right here…

…Keeping you Posted.
