A special thank you to Jim Moore for his willlingness to share this story on Memorial Day. We are grateful for all those who have served, and offer our rememberances on this day.
Dad was assigned to the USS Hornet and helped escort Doolottle's Raiders to Tokyo. He was a rear gunner radio man flying in a Douglas Dauntless during the battle of Midway and the battle of Santa Cruz where the Hornet was sunk and they had to land on the Carrier USS Enterprise. After counting 150+ bullet holes in his plane they just pushed it in the water to make room for others from the Hornet.
Every year on Memorial Day he would retell the story of his best friend from High School, Ronnie Fischer, who flew off on a torpedo bomber from the Hornet at Midway and how the entire squadron was lost and only one man survived.
I'll always remember the picture of this handsome kid and his Air Medal on our hallway wall and how his parents were too devastated to want to keep it.Â
Here's to so many who have given the ultimate price for our freedoms and those who must carry the scars of war.

Comment text: Marie will be forever treasured in memories.
The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it.
Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all.
An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile.
For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses.

Comment text: I just figured out that Betty was my 1st cousin. Her dad Ted was my dad's brother. I never knew Ted or Betty, but I wish I did. I am 73 and live in IL. I am building my family tree and see where Betty has fit in. Blessings to you Curt and family.
