Bighorn Bulletin -- Notes from Oasis Academy

Bighorn Bulletin -- Notes from Oasis Academy
One of the winners in the Pi Day poetry contest

Author: Angela Viera

Pi Day Fun

Classes were encouraged to create an informative and fun poem about pi to help celebrate Pi Day on March 14 (3.14).

Pi is represented by a Greek letter that is an abbreviation for the Greek word perimeter. It is used in geometry to help mathematicians discover the elements of a circle. Pi represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. It is approximately equal to 3.14159265358979323846…into infinity.

Rachel Dahl, from The Fallon Post, Sammie Gomes, from the Oasis Board, and Oasis School Nurse Shauna Craig judged the submitted poems.

The winning classes were Mr. Lewis’ eighth-grade class and Mrs. Renfroe’s third-grade class. The winners were treated to homemade pies by Mrs. Becky Matthews and got to Pie the Principals with whipped cream pies on the Oasis playground.

Any time we can support creativity centered around academics in such a fun way, we are here for it!” says CEO Melissa Mackedon. “My hair has never been stickier. It was a fun day!”

“Be irrational - Happy Pi Day!” exclaimed Principal Rochelle Tisdale

Senior Spotlight Sasha Tanner

Small class sizes and staff that are always willing to help are just part of what Senior Sasha Tanner has loved about her senior year at Oasis Academy.

Starting at Oasis in August 2021, Tanner’s time at the school is not long, but she has made great memories and gained valuable experiences. “My favorite memory was the Black Light Dance. I love dancing with my classmates and being silly,” laughs Tanner.

The welcoming, kind atmosphere has also made its impact on the senior. “I would like to thank the very kind high school staff - Mrs. Swan, Mrs. Polish, Mr. Lenon, and Mr. Venturacci. They are always quick to help with anything, including college and scholarship applications. I don’t know what I’d do without the awesome staff.”

Tanner will join the Aggies of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas next fall. She will major in sociology and wants to discover exactly what she’s interested in in the field of social studies.

Oasis’s Jump Start Program with Western Nevada College has given her an advantage for the transition to Texas A&M. “The classes through Oasis at WNC are contributing to my college experience. Those courses will count towards my curriculum at A&M. I’m so grateful for Oasis and the program.” Tanner said.

Along with an outstanding academic career, Tanner has also been active in Student Council, Honor Society, and is playing double bass in the pit ensemble for the upcoming community “Freaky Friday” play. “I love to be part of groups that improve our community,” she said.

Her advice for future students is sound, “To future students and any student, I would like to say, don't be afraid to ask questions about what you are unsure of. Ask for help. It strengthens your relationships by building trust and communication. Every day is a new opportunity to learn.”

Tanner’s mother, Carly Tanner currently teaches sixth grade for Oasis Academy and her father is the Commanding Officer of NAS Fallon.
