Jacob Munoz wins Reno Tahoe Piano Competition

Second-grader Jacob Munoz won the Reno Tahoe Piano Competition for ages nine and under this weekend in Reno. The competition included participants from all over the west coast. Munoz memorized and played “The Fluttering Leaves” in A minor and “Love Will See Us Through” in D minor. For winning the competition he received a $300 prize.

The now eight-year-old has been playing for three years. He takes lessons from Florida Manse, owner of Jeridels Piano Studio in Fallon, and Dr. Mayu Nomura at the Steinway Gallery. Jacob practices every day, starting with the Hanon to warm up.

Jacob says, “Learning new songs is my favorite part. My favorite composer is Mozart and my favorite song is “Alla Turca.”

Jacob wants to continue with music as he grows up, to eventually play in orchestras and symphonies.

Senior Spotlight: Hunter Arends

Oasis has grown a lot since senior Hunter Arends started at the school in 2014 in fifth grade. Arends recognizes how he has grown and learned with the school and the impact the school and its programs have made in his life.

This includes the Future Farmers of America program (FFA) led by teacher Ms. Jackie Bogdanowicz. “I’d like to thank Ms. B for being an amazing Ag teacher and helping me whenever I needed it,” says Arends. “My favorite class has been FFA because it has always been fun and Ms. B always tried to keep it interesting, and teach us something, even during quarantine.”

Besides succeeding in the classroom, he will be receiving both his High School Diploma and Associates of Science Degree this May, and he has participated in a variety of extracurricular activities. This includes cross country, archery, golf, and student council.

His favorite memory of participating in these groups is the annual Student Leadership retreat to Disneyland through Student Council.

Arends has valuable advice for students, “Get your homework done a day before it’s due because sometimes things don’t go as planned.”

Upon graduating from Oasis and Western Nevada College, he will attend the University of Nevada, Reno, and study electrical engineering.

New Frontier’s Brittany Frew teaches Middle School Students Valuable Skills

Oasis Academy is proud to have wonderful partnerships throughout the community. One of those is with New Frontier. Working with middle school students alongside Counselor Andy Lenon on Social Emotional Learning, New Frontier Youth Counselor Brittany Frew has been visiting with Middle School students over the past six weeks.

The lessons from Frew focus on teaching and practicing the skills for emotional regulation and self-awareness.

Frew’s message to the students is, “despite what the world tells you, you have unlimited control within.”

Hunter McNabb Finishes Second at Speaking Contest

Hunter McNabb placed second at the Lion’s Club Regional Zone Level of the Lions Club Speech Contest in Yerington on February 15.

This year’s topic for the competition was Should Community Service be a College Requirement. Hunter won the local Lions Club competition to move onto the Zone Level. This is his second year competing and he plans to compete again next year.

They strung them along for years until they had no financial choice but to accept and get out. My Dad even hauled water for the Snow ranch trying to stay afloat. May God bless you all. I truly pray it works out for you.Comment publication date: 3/28/26, 9:22 PMComment source: Local Rancher Says Navy Land Expansion is Devastating His Family RanchComment author: Lynn JohnsonComment text: I remember your mother well; she was a lovely and kind woman. I see glimpses of your face in the years worn onto my dad. It makes me feel more connected to you in some way. I remember the familiar kindness from you that I know in my dad. I would’ve really liked to have a good conversation. I only have a handful of memories with you, but you were loving, and you were kind. I wish I was able to say more. If I am someone to you, I hope I make you proud. Thank you Aunt for this sweet post.Comment publication date: 3/27/26, 12:11 AMComment source: Obituary -- Randolph Floris Banovich C Comment author: RBCComment text: The Navy should reimburse the market cost of replacing the grazing land they are taking.
