Each month students will be selected that exemplify what Buster, Oasis Academy’s Mascot, looks for in Oasis students. These are students that go above and beyond, show kindness, respect others and themselves, strive for excellence, and persevere even when tasks are difficult. This month’s selectees are:
Gabriel Houyoux: Sixth-grader Gabriel loves reading and writing. He has already written a few books about magical adventures and horror. He’s looking forward to raising a lamb for FFA this year and enjoys cooking “anything he can get his hands on.” Counselor Andy Lenon says Gabriel, “Has an awesome sense of humor and is engaging when I teach in class. He is a go-getter and excited to work on his VFW Patriot's Pen essay. I am proud of you Gabriel”
Thomas Acomb: Thomas loves the swings and playing outside. His favorite subject in school is math. When he’s at home he helps take care of his chickens including Sticky Rice, Rocky, and Giraffe. “Thomas is only in 1st grade; he is an excellent attentive listener. He does a great job of tracking the speaker and engaging in lessons. When he raises his hand, I always know that he has something to share that is on topic and will add a lot to the discussion. He is a good role model for his class on how to be a present and ready learner, that's why he's one of Buster's Bests.” says Counselor Shelley Kelly of Thomas.
Greyson Johnson: Greyson wants to be a teacher when he gets older. He is in fifth grade and enjoys playing basketball on the Oasis Middle School Team. His favorite subject is math, and he plays video games in his free time. “Greyson is a lot of fun to teach in class. When he raises his hand you never really know what you're going to get. It might be something insightful. Or funny. Or both.” reports Counselor Shelley Kelly. “I hear from his classmates that they can always count on Greyson to be kind to them, even when others are not. I appreciate that he is kind when he doesn't know people are paying attention. Kindness matters, and that's why he's one of Buster's Bests.”
Disneyland Retreat: Students from the Student Council went to Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm’s Not Scary Farms this past weekend for a Leadership Retreat. Over fifty students attended the three-day retreat. “Thank you to Oasis Administration and Oasis Board for allowing this leadership opportunity to students again. Mrs. Polish was also essential in assisting with all the behind-the-scenes logistics, along with all the chaperones who attended. The energy and enthusiasm that can be reached at a retreat of this caliber is huge and maintaining that energy for the weekend and beyond is so beneficial to the success of our Student Council/Leadership program. By using the time on this trip to share ideas, bond, and allow students a fun time, we are creating an experience that will lay the groundwork for the success of our Student Council/Leadership program and our school climate and culture. Numerous times throughout the weekend we were told that our students were respectful and kind. We could not be prouder of how they all conducted themselves,” says Student Council/Leadership Advisor Lisa Swan. Upon returning students are required to submit a paper discussing what type of leader they are, decision-making skills they learned, struggles that occurred within their groups, and compromises that were made. The trip was open to all students enrolled in Student Council. Students were able to work at the Uniform Store and were encouraged to participate in other activities to help raise funds for the trip.
Nevada Day: Students celebrated Nevada throughout the last week of October. The Marketing class created posters to showcase the many wonderful things about the state. Including the state’s flag, cities, state bird, state fossil, state animal, and much more. Honored guests also lead the school in the morning pledge on Tuesday and Thursday. State Assemblywoman Dr. Robin Titus did the honors and met with student leadership from Student Council and FFA in the morning. “Thank you, Oasis Charter School for inviting me to lead the Pledge of Allegiance during your Nevada Day weeklong celebration. Great sharing my experience and thoughts as a legislator with your Student Council and FFA Leadership,” says Titus. Mayor Ken Tedford led students in the pledge Thursday morning. “We appreciate Assemblywoman Robin Titus taking time out of her busy schedule to travel to Fallon to meet with Oasis Academy student leadership teams. She was a wealth of information and provided the students with insight into government at the local and state levels. Thank you for being accessible and available to the youth of our community,” added Principal Rochelle Tisdale. “Oasis Academy would also like to thank Mayor Ken Tedford for leading our student body in the daily morning Pledge of Allegiance. We appreciate your participation.”
