October Myths - Hawaiian Night Marchers

Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches and scenic views. There are also historic sites, like Pearl Harbor, unique Hawaiian dances, and last but not least, bright Hawaiian shirts. The one thing that’s not mentioned much in talking or learning about Hawaii is their myths.

One common Hawaii myth told is about the Night Marchers. All though it doesn’t sound scary, it is every Hawaiian tourist’s worst nightmare. Imagine yourself on vacation in Hawaii, laying on the beach looking out at the ocean, full moon shining down. All of a sudden you hear the faint sound of drums banging in the distance. You start to see torches out on the horizon. It’s the spirits of Hawaiian warriors and they are dedicated to protecting the islands from all outside threats. Allegedly they will spare your life if you lay face down and pee yourself in submission. Or if miraculously you share a bloodline with one of the warriors. It's also advised if you see them don’t look directly at them. If they are in a procession don’t interrupt them. The Night Marchers start to appear in the last 4 Hawaiian moon phases. As the moon diminishes into blackness, the warriors prefer sacred sites. They use spears and swords; however, their eyes are just as dangerous. If you make eye contact, you have to march with them forever. So, when you go to Hawaii, be sure to book your stay for before the full moon.

Comment author: Claude EzzellComment text: Paul was one of the most manifest men I have ever met. He was a good friends with my Dad and always had an entertaining story for the occasion. One of my most favorite stories Paul told dated back to the late 60s or early 70s and it revolved around him killing a deer way out in the mountains. Naturally the deer ran down into a deep canyon and died. Knowing that it would take him forever to haul it out he devised an awesome plan. After preparing the deer he drove back to NAS Fallon and rustled up a SAR crew and they flew out and picked up the deer. Of course it was labeled as a training flight but what the hell in those days you could do that sort of thing. Rest in Peace my friend until we meet again!!Comment publication date: 4/11/24, 1:15 PMComment source: Obituary - LCDR Paul N PflimlinComment author: THughesComment text: So sad to hear.
