Banner E.R. Treated 500 More COVID Patients in September than Last Year’s Surge

September was a busy month, reported Banner Churchill Medical Center. According to information released on October 7, the intensive care unit (ICU) operated at or above 100 percent capacity for 67 percent of the days in September, and the medical/surgical department was at or above capacity for half of the days in September. The emergency department (ED) saw a substantial increase in patients during September, with 500 more ED visits than during the previous COVID surge in November and December 2020. COVID-positive patients accounted for an average of 50 percent or more of the hospital’s average daily census of patients in September, and 90 percent of those were unvaccinated.

Our frontline health care workers have spent countless hours and days providing excellent care and compassion to all patients.

Throughout the COVID pandemic, Banner Churchill has worked closely with other hospital systems, in Nevada and outside Nevada, on transferring patients to, or receiving patients from, other health care facilities as needs arose. We are grateful for the Nevada Hospital Association’s professional support during this challenging time and their focus on the community’s health and wellbeing.

We continue to encourage all those who are eligible to get the COVID vaccine as soon as possible. These safe and effective vaccines are what will get us out of this pandemic, but we need the community’s help. Churchill County offers both Covid-19 vaccines and Covid-19 testing at the county fairgrounds. Please visit their website at www.churchillcountynv.gov for information on dates and times.

We reached out to the writer/submitter and got this info back...hope it's helpful. PBM: Pharmacy Benefit Managers are pharmacies that are owned by insurance companies. (CVS is one.) They negotiate with drug makers to get reduced pricing for medications, but they historically have not passed along those savings to patients. https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/pharmacy-benefit-managers-staff-report.pdf MFN: Most Favored Nation pricing is a policy that means a country agrees to offer the same trade concessions (like tariffs or price reductions) to all member nations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). When applied to pharmaceuticals, it could disrupt global access, deter innovation, and obscure the deeper systemic issues in American health care. https://petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2025/05/22/the-global-risks-of-americas-most-favored-nation-drug-pricing-policy/Comment publication date: 6/23/25, 7:47 AMComment source: L E T T E R TO THE EDITOR
