The Coalition for Senior Citizens is a non-profit organization, registered with the Nevada Secretary of State since July 1991, and is currently providing research and acquisition of grant funds for supporting the senior citizens’ programs offered at the William Pennington Life Center located at 952 South Maine Street in Fallon.

Current board members are Chairwoman Jill Manha, Vice-Chair and County Commissioner Dr. Justin Heath, Acting Secretary/Treasurer Jamie Hyde, City Councilwoman Karla Kent, Roberta Lind, Julie Richards, and Carol Seitzinger, who is also their Volunteer Coordinator. Manha said the board is also supported administratively by Brenda Moore, an employee at the Life Center.

The board meetings are every other month in the County Commission Chambers. This month's meeting will be held September 27, with agenda items including discussion of a board retreat for the future role of the Coalition for Senior Citizens, a revision to the Bylaws and Mission Statement, an update on Life Center programs and activities, and financial reports.

Manha said, “The role has definitely changed for the Coalition. We support the Life Center by having the ability to directly represent the senior population at the Life Center, which is very exciting. We also have the ability to procure grants and other funding sources for senior support in the community, over and above what the county is able to provide.  This new role allows us to be more precise and focused, and we are thrilled to be working with the county.”  She also discussed the feedback received about the Life Center's expanded services and menu. “I've heard many comments from the seniors who say they are really enjoying the menu choices, they feel the food services have improved, and really enjoy the option to have morning coffee and pastries.”

Hyde said, “We have been getting quite a few compliments on the Center being open for longer periods of time. They love the dancing, the ice cream machine, everybody loves the ice cream machine. And the milk, they are all so happy that they can drink all the milk they want.” She continued by saying, “Although change is always hard, I think the transition went very well. The additional activities being offered combined with the Center having retained most of its key staff has made this a positive experience. I think it's easier to be focused as a board now, and we know what our specific role is. We used to have oversight over all of the operations, now the county does all that. As we progress as a board, we will become more focused on grants that may be available to us. We look forward to serving more participants and continuing to improve the services provided there.”

The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses. Her dad Ted was my dad's brother. I never knew Ted or Betty, but I wish I did. I am 73 and live in IL. I am building my family tree and see where Betty has fit in. Blessings to you Curt and family.
