The Churchill County School District Board of Trustees met last week in a regular meeting where they accepted a donation of nearly $200,000 from the Estate of Bridget Jean Selmi to the Churchill County High School Scholarship fund. Jean Hanifan Selmi grew up in Fallon, spending time on the Hanifan farm in the St. Clair district before attending the Reno Business College. She went to work for Nevada Seafood company in 1956 as a bookkeeper, operating that company for 56 years, and eventually purchasing it. Named Businesswoman of the Year in Reno in the early 90s, Selmi employed numerous students over the years and was always willing to provide assistance and support. The scholarship donation will be kept in a separate fund and managed at the district level. Criteria for the award and the amount are currently being decided by Selmi’s family.
The board also heard a report from Superintendent Summer Stephens regarding the district response to the COVID situation. So far, there have been 1,752 exclusions from classes due to exposure to a person positive for the virus. Of those 93 students tested positive along with 33 staff members.
“Everyone is also concerned about mental health,” she said, “hopefully soon outside activities will begin.”
One parent spoke during public comment regarding the difficulties for her high school student in getting the instruction she needs with the current modified schedule. Stephens said the second semester will continue on the same schedule and there are no plans to change the schedule at this time.
Stephens also reported that legislative activities are ramping up and the district will be actively involved at the state level. There were two meetings held last week with legislative leadership, including a meeting of the Assembly Education committee. In spite of being closed to the public, committee members have expressed a desire for people to testify on issues when it is possible through the remote options.
Stephens also reported that the second round of COVID vaccinations are scheduled to be administered to staff in med-February.
Trustees held Consent Agenda item B for a subsequent meeting and discussed the proposed contract for Michelle Anderson as Accounting Supervisor. This position was previously held by Terri Laca who retired in December as the Accounting Manager. In order to attract qualified candidates, the position has been modified to be an Accounting Supervisor with the idea that this person would supervise the two accounting tech positions in the office and the comptroller. Christi Fielding would supervise the Accounting Supervisor position. The arrangement would be similar to Kenny Mitchell in the operations position supervising the bus shed, shop, and maintenance departments. Human Resources Director Kevin Lords clarified that after discussion with the classified association, this position will serve at the will of the board because there will be supervisory responsibilities and will not fall under the negotiated contract.
