Observations from 5th grade - Adjusting to COVID-19

On March 15th, my life as a fifth grader completely changed. There was no more school, and I had to stay at home because of COVID-19. This adjustment was not easy for my three siblings and me. We, all of a sudden, had to complete all our schoolwork at home. My mom was ready to pull her hair out the first week. We only have one computer and all of us had assigned computer work. After about a week, we were fully adjusted and had a workspace set up to complete schoolwork.  This made it much easier to concentrate and get work completed.

My family has spent a lot of time together playing board games and jumping on our trampoline to help pass time. We did a lot of baking; I love to bake. I made cupcakes with my five-year-old sister that were vanilla flavored with orange buttercream frosting. My siblings and I also made a Mother’s Day cake to surprise my mom on Mother’s Day. She loved it and was very surprised. We had ice cream sundaes with lots of different toppings- M&M’s, Reese's peanut butter cups, sprinkles, whipped cream, nuts, caramel and fudge topping, and gummy bears.  The sundaes were my entire family's favorite. It became a nightly routine for a week. Luckily, even though we all have sweet tooths, we all remain very active.

We are doing what we can to stay healthy. I finished my first 5k virtual run with my mom. It was a fun experience that I want to continue doing. My brother, sisters, and I jump on the trampoline for hours a day. My mom and dad have also put us to work pulling the weeds on our property. We also garden but it didn’t go so well because all the wild rabbits ate everything. We decided we need a fence.

We’ve tried to make the best of a not so pleasant situation of having to stay at home. I adjusted to this situation by knowing that COVID-19 was not going away, and so I mentally prepared my brain for the temporary stay at home orders. Staying busy is the best medicine to cure a wandering mind.

I have read in the news about the corona virus, and it is hard to know what a true fact is because there is so much variation of information. I worry that kids will not be able to return to school in August. I appreciate the school doing the distance learning after the closure, but I do not want to do it to start sixth grade. I hope that the school has safety routines in place when we return to school. I want to be able to use the restroom as needed and I hope it feels normal to be at school.
