Plumbing problems have delayed the reopening of Laura Mills Park, and the city of Fallon has not established a firm date for when the renovated park will reopen to the public.
Public Works Director Brian Byrd said continuing plumbing issues have caused setbacks in the project, preventing officials from setting a specific opening date.
The renovation includes an $815,798.81 contract awarded to Ernst Earthworks to replace nearly three-quarters of a mile of deteriorating asphalt walking paths with wider, fiber-reinforced concrete walkways. Other improvements include new playground equipment, irrigation upgrades, landscaping, and accessibility improvements.
The project also includes a professionally designed irrigation system and soil remediation.
New playground equipment has been installed, with separate play areas designed for children ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12. The park’s outdoor fitness court, completed in October 2025, was the first phase of the city’s planned improvements.
Laura Mills Park was named in honor of Laura Mills, an educator and naturalist who taught in Fallon for 40 years and graduated from Churchill County High School in 1912. The city purchased the property from Churchill County in 1972, and the park was dedicated Oct. 1, 1975, with help from community volunteers.
Over the years, restrooms were installed, and a gazebo was added in the early 2000s. Additional phases of the city’s long-term park improvement plan are scheduled to continue through 2031.
