Commissioners Approve Canvass of Special City Council Election

Commissioners Approve Canvass of Special City Council Election

On July 29, Churchill County commissioners met in a special meeting to review and accept the canvass of votes from the City of Fallon special election, which was held after a ballot mapping error prevented 881 Ward 1 residents from receiving ballots that included the City Council race.

The special election was held July 21, 2026, in which Ward 1 candidate Lori Norcutt prevailed over opponents Ryan Swirczek and Daniel Doty. According to the canvass, Norcutt captured 56.33% of the vote with 129 votes, while Swirczek received 80 votes, or 34.93%, and Doty received 20 votes, or 8.73%.

As required by Nevada statute, the official canvass of the July 21, 2026, Churchill County special election was completed by the Churchill County Board of Commissioners within 10 working days following the election.

According to Churchill County Clerk/Treasurer Linda Rothery, only 229 of the 1,938 registered Ward 1 voters cast ballots, resulting in an 11.82% voter turnout. Of those, 137 ballots were cast by mail.

"The actual turnout percentages were right in line from the general election," Rothery said, noting she had compared the turnout before asking commissioners to approve the canvass. Upon approval, Rothery will transmit the certified election results to the Secretary of State as required.

With no public comment, commissioners unanimously approved the canvass.
