After months of planning, a group of Churchill County High School parents has formed the Greenwave Music Boosters to provide financial and volunteer support for student musicians, beginning with the purchase of approximately $4,000 in new drum harnesses for the marching band's percussion section.
Officially established in April, the organization supports the school's marching band, concert band, choir and color guard. According to its mission statement, the Greenwave Music Boosters raise funds for instruments, travel and supplies, recruit volunteers, strengthen communication among students, parents, directors and the school, and build community pride in the music program.
Secretary Megan Smith said parents formed the organization to expand opportunities for student musicians by providing additional equipment, financial support and volunteer assistance beyond what the school's music program budget provides.
Smith said parents also wanted to take on projects outside the music directors' responsibilities so they could focus on teaching and leading students.
The booster club's first project replaced worn drum harnesses used by the percussion section. Smith said the previous harnesses had been in service for years and were showing significant wear. Anonymous donors funded the purchase of 10 replacement harnesses valued at about $4,000.
The organization's next major goal is replacing the marching band's uniforms, many of which are more than 20 years old. Members estimate the project will cost between $60,000 and $70,000.
To help reach that goal, the Greenwave Music Boosters have partnered with WaFd Bank, where donations will be accepted throughout August. The organization also is taking preorders for Greenwave-themed blankets as an additional fundraiser.
While fundraising is an important part of the organization's mission, Smith said the larger goal is creating opportunities for students and allowing music directors to concentrate on teaching while parents provide additional support.
During summer band camp, booster volunteers supplied snacks, drinks and sunscreen and organized tie-dye shirts for each section to help students build friendships before the marching season began.
The marching band also has been invited to participate in University of Nevada, Reno Band Day this fall, where Churchill County High School students will perform with the university marching band during a football game.
Millie Harper said music programs often become a place where students find friendships and a sense of belonging.
"Music gives kids confidence and a place where they feel accepted," Harper said. "We want to make sure future students have those same opportunities."
The organization also supports a growing color guard program. Members said participation has increased from one student last year to about 10 this season under coach Ashlee Rhodes.
Looking ahead, the founders hope additional parents and community members will become involved so the organization continues long after their own children graduate.
