The Fallon City Council approved nearly $2.8 million in contracts Tuesday for airport, park, and water infrastructure projects expected to begin later this year.
The council awarded a $1.165 million contract to Fallon-based A&K Earthmovers to construct a new taxi lane and extend an existing taxi lane at Fallon Municipal Airport.
Public Works Director Brian Byrd said A&K submitted the lowest responsive and responsible bid, coming in 5.4% below the engineer's estimate and 21% below the next lowest bid.
The Federal Aviation Administration will reimburse 95% of the construction cost, leaving the city's share at $58,250. Byrd said the city expects the remaining local match to be reimbursed through the Nevada Aviation Transportation Advisory Committee.
Councilman Paul Harmon praised the bid, noting it came in below the engineer's estimate. Construction is expected to begin later this summer and continue into the fall.
The council approved a $221,374 agreement with J-U-B Engineers to provide construction administration and inspection services for the airport project. The FAA will reimburse 95% of that cost.
Council members awarded an $815,798.81 contract to Ernst Earthworks to replace approximately three-quarters of a mile of deteriorating asphalt walking paths at Laura Mills Park with fiber-reinforced concrete.
The Laura Mills Park project includes wider walkways, drainage improvements, and accessibility upgrades. While Ernst Earthworks completes the concrete work, city crews will install a new irrigation system in the center of the park, and previously approved playground equipment will be installed during construction.
Byrd said the city hopes to complete the walking paths, irrigation work, and playground installation before Oct. 1. Portions of the park will close temporarily while construction is underway.
Harmon said the city should continue informing residents about the project so they understand the improvements being made and the reason for temporary closures.
The council approved a $616,550 change order for the Rattlesnake Hill Water Tank Demolition Project. The change order follows soil testing that found additional site preparation was needed before a new welded steel water tank can be constructed.
Byrd said the additional work will leave the site ready once funding becomes available for the replacement tank and that the overall project remains under budget.
The final major action approved Tuesday was a maintenance agreement with Churchill County for future softball fields and related facilities funded through the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act. The agreement establishes the long-term maintenance responsibilities required under the grant. Churchill County commissioners approved the agreement June 17.
Following Tuesday's regular meeting, the council convened Wednesday as the Board of Adjustment to consider zoning matters.
