Fallon residents are now able to “check out” vegetable and flower seeds from the new community seed bank in the library. The seed exchange allows patrons to get seeds for free, grow them, and then contribute seeds back to the program after harvesting.
Joe Salsman, Technology Director at the Churchill County Library, said the starting batch came from Seed Savers, a national program that preserves heirloom varieties of flowers and vegetables. Local seed donations round out the collection. Residents can pick out 3-5 seed envelopes from the little apothecary-style cabinet in the Makerspace Room, along with an info sheet with planting details.
After cultivating the plant, the seeds are harvested in the fall and donated back to the library. A packet of guidelines with information on maintaining seed purity, cross-pollination, seed harvesting, drying, and storing seeds is available. The library hopes to receive back just as many seeds as it lent out to help perpetuate the seed exchange next year.
The program kicked off April 19 with a speaker from the Walker Basin Conservancy.
