Obituary — Maurice Brendan Hanifan

Obituary — Maurice Brendan Hanifan

Maurice Brendan Hanifan, 87, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2023, at home in Fallon, NV surrounded by family.

Maurice was born July 13, 1935, in Fallon, as one of six children to Maurice and Elizabeth Hanifan, who had immigrated from Ireland and settled in the St. Claire district. Once graduating from Churchill County High School in 1952, he worked construction in Elko and then attended Cal State Poly where he learned the trade of meat cutting. In 1957, Maurice joined the Army and while stationed at Fort Bliss, TX, met the love of his life Georgia Ann Steuart. The two were married in Fallon in August of 1959. After two years in Reno, Maurice and Georgia settled in Fallon where they raised four children.

Maurice worked as a meat cutter at the Fallon Safeway store for many years. During this time, he built two mobile home parks in Fallon. Once this was accomplished, “Hanifan’s Meats” was opened. The two mobile home parks along with the meat shop would keep them busy until retirement.

Maurice was involved in the community, including being a member of the hospital and school boards. He was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and a very active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He loved to hunt and fish and was a sponsor and player of the Hanifan’s Meats men’s slow-pitch softball team. Maurice loved people and is remembered as a person who helped others with either a helping hand, a kind word, or one of his infectious smiles.

Maurice is survived by his younger brother Phillip (Carol), his wife Georgia, children Cathy (Mike), Kenneth (Michele and Faith), Brenda (Jay), Lisa (Mark), his grandsons Cameron and Kaden, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins across the globe.

A funeral mass was held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on July 1, 2023. Maurice was laid to rest in the Hanifan family section at Churchill County Cemetery.

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face.

And the rains fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again,

May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.

Thank you, Loretta at The Garden’s Funeral Home, Father Tony, Father Mark, and the members of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

They strung them along for years until they had no financial choice but to accept and get out. My Dad even hauled water for the Snow ranch trying to stay afloat. May God bless you all. I truly pray it works out for you.Comment publication date: 3/28/26, 9:22 PMComment source: Local Rancher Says Navy Land Expansion is Devastating His Family RanchComment author: Lynn JohnsonComment text: I remember your mother well; she was a lovely and kind woman. I see glimpses of your face in the years worn onto my dad. It makes me feel more connected to you in some way. I remember the familiar kindness from you that I know in my dad. I would’ve really liked to have a good conversation. I only have a handful of memories with you, but you were loving, and you were kind. I wish I was able to say more. If I am someone to you, I hope I make you proud. Thank you Aunt for this sweet post.Comment publication date: 3/27/26, 12:11 AMComment source: Obituary -- Randolph Floris Banovich C Comment author: RBCComment text: The Navy should reimburse the market cost of replacing the grazing land they are taking.
