Wednesday, January 11 was a special day for the Domestic Violence Intervention office in Fallon, made possible by a donation from New Millennium Building Systems. Design Supervisor Rusty Diaz made the presentation to DVI's Executive Director Karen Moessner who said the funds would be used for client gas cards.
When Moessner asked how DVI had been chosen, Diaz said, “In 2014 our group of employees started doing a food drive competition to give back to the community, and this is our ninth year doing that. This year was really surprising because the company partnered with us by donating $10,000 for various organizations. We had a competition, and each team was able to pick which organization they wanted their money to go toward. Engineering won the competition, and we picked you. Then the Finance and Admin team also picked you. So, we have a combined total of $2,000 that we would like to donate to your organization.”
As Moessner accepted the check, she said, “This will be so helpful as we have suffered some budget cuts this year. These types of funds go directly to the clients, so I would like to buy gas cards for them. Gas is so expensive.” She acknowledged it was a blessing in disguise. “Most grants don't let you hand out these to clients when they need it.” She told the group in attendance that DVI has been in Fallon since 1982 providing emergency shelter, safe space, and other services for domestic violence victims. They also provide support to Lyon County which lost its DVI office two years ago, but which Moessner is working to reestablish. Funding comes from grants and a portion of marriage license fees. “We really appreciate this for just individual client problems that grants don't always solve.” To which Diaz replied, “We are so glad we get to help.”
The other organizations benefiting from New Millennium's cash donation this year included the United Way, Churchill Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs, the Eddy House, Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation, American Legion Post 16, Churchill Animal Protection Society (CAPS), Calvary Chapel Fernley Food Bank, and the CCSD Middle School Music Program.
On December 20, New Millennium employees also made their ninth annual donation of items they collected to the Out of Egypt Food Pantry and Toys for Tots. Diaz said, “We donated 4,004 food, toiletry/hygiene, school supplies, and baby items, 26 Birthday’s in a Bag (everything you need to have a birthday party), 60 winter hats, gloves, scarfs, sweaters, and coats, 252 toys for Toys for Tots, and $5,210 in gift cards that will be used to supplement the food pantry's needs for groceries such as produce and meat. We adopted the Out of Egypt Food Pantry as our charity as they provide an extremely important service to the community, offering groceries to approximately 1,400 needy families and individual members of our community each month.”
New Millennium Building Systems is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) is one of the largest steel producers in America and employs close to 280 people at its Fallon facility where steel joists and girders for the non-residential construction industry are manufactured.
