School Board Candidates Say “No” to Compensation

School Board Candidates Say “No” to Compensation

Two candidates for Churchill County School District Board of Trustees issued a joint press release this week to announce they won’t accept any compensation, be it salary, insurance coverage, or Nevada PERS if they are elected to serve the community on the school board. They also encourage the other board candidates to do the same.

Joe McFadden additionally said, “I will donate my salary as a trustee to meet teacher and classroom supply needs of local teachers,” said McFadden. “I am also choosing not to take the health insurance and PERS benefits that are given to board trustees. This money can be much better spent on teacher salaries, bus drivers, instructional aides, or many other needs in the district.”

“I am covered with health insurance by my wife from the school district she works for, so I see no need to be covered by the taxpayers of Churchill County,” added Bill Post. “I also see no need to receive PERS while I am serving the county. We have a great need for teacher retention and for attracting new teachers to our district. Let’s use this money to that end. I will also donate my salary as trustee to areas that our teachers tell me should be prioritized.”

Trustees are required to be paid once they are elected; however, nothing prevents them from donating that salary. Governor Steve Sisolak donates his taxpayer-funded salary to the state K-12 schools, making a $27,474 contribution each quarter.
