Obituary -- Edna Van Leuven
Edna Van Leuven

Edna Van Leuven passed away peacefully at home on the evening of August 23, 2022, with her devoted son Douglas by her side.  She was born on June 20, 1924, to Edna Stokes Hoffman and Ambrose Bernside Hoffman in Philadelphia, PA.

Edna was preceded in death by her parents, sister Jeanne Stokes Wilson, first husband Donald Hill, her beloved second husband Marine Corp Sergeant Ralph Daniel Van Leuven (Van), and her son Dean Hill. Edna was the mother of five sons: Donald, Douglas, Dave, Dean, and Daniel Hill, the grandmother of eight, and the great-grandmother of fourteen.

Edna was a devoted mother and wife, a published author, a columnist for the Reno-Gazette and Lahontan Valley News, a real estate agent, a waitress, and doing whatever was needed to help the family. In retirement, her favorite thing was doing her Crewel needlepoint and sharing it with family and friends, donating much of it to local charities over the years.

A member of the Eastern Star, her ashes will be buried next to her beloved husband Van in the Masonic Cemetery in Carson City, NV. Per her request, there will be no memorial. Instead, Edna requested that you send donations in her name to the local CAPS, (Churchill Animal Protection Society), or a charity of your choice.

I can’t believe that I am reading Edna’s obit almost exactly one year after her death. I tried for years to contact her after she left us at the Carson Bureau of the RGJ newspaper. We all loved her so very much. She was always at the ready with a great story, laughter and home baked cookies. I gained weight on Edna’s watch. She was our friend, mother and grandmother. She talked all the time about Doug and the rest of her children. She loved you all deeply. We all loved her. Hugs, Lisa J Tolda

She was the most beautiful soul. She knitted our sweet baby a blanket long ago that we have always loved. We are so terribly sorry for your loss Doug. She will always be remembered and her memories always cherished.

The flowers she made me still hang on my wall. She was a very talented lady in many ways. You were so fortunate to have so many years with her! Hugs to you for your loss!

They strung them along for years until they had no financial choice but to accept and get out. My Dad even hauled water for the Snow ranch trying to stay afloat. May God bless you all. I truly pray it works out for you.Comment publication date: 3/28/26, 9:22 PMComment source: Local Rancher Says Navy Land Expansion is Devastating His Family RanchComment author: Lynn JohnsonComment text: I remember your mother well; she was a lovely and kind woman. I see glimpses of your face in the years worn onto my dad. It makes me feel more connected to you in some way. I remember the familiar kindness from you that I know in my dad. I would’ve really liked to have a good conversation. I only have a handful of memories with you, but you were loving, and you were kind. I wish I was able to say more. If I am someone to you, I hope I make you proud. Thank you Aunt for this sweet post.Comment publication date: 3/27/26, 12:11 AMComment source: Obituary -- Randolph Floris Banovich C Comment author: RBCComment text: The Navy should reimburse the market cost of replacing the grazing land they are taking.
