AAUW Gives Awards

Staff report -- The American Association of University Women, Fallon Chapter, recently awarded their scholarships and recognized the “Community Woman of the Year.” AAUW has over 50 years of history providing scholarships for women. AAUW Scholarship Recipients in Fallon receive $1,500 each for tuition at the University of Nevada Reno. Winners this year were CCHS Seniors Madison Blea, and Elizabeth Stephens. The group also recognized Michelle Berney as Community Woman of the Year for her dedication and work to the Fallon community. Berney is active in her church organization, the PEO group, Garden Club, and the restoration of the historic Fallon Theatre. Madison Blea has a wide array of interests that are very impressive. She has been involved in a range of activities in the Fallon community while maintaining a 3.8 GPA and a ranking of 10^th in her class by the end of her 7^th semester at Churchill County High School. She has maintained this high GPA while serving in many volunteer capacities at the Pennington Life Center, local blood drives, and serving as an intern for the City of Fallon. She is an avid lover of the arts, performing in dance for many years as well as theater and orchestra, where her chosen instrument is the cello. Madison is interested in pursuing biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Nevada. Following her college graduation, she hopes to enter the medical field in some capacity. Elizabeth Stephens grew up in Upton, Wyoming, and moved to Churchill County during her junior year in high school. She has compiled a lengthy record of achievement, both in Wyoming and during her time in Churchill County. She holds a GPA of 3.9 and at the end of her 7^th semester of high school ranked number 6 in her class at CCHS. She also has an ACT composite of 33. These academic achievements are in addition to serving as a CAN at Highland Manor of Fallon in addition to a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including community service hours in nursing, teaching American Sign Language and serving as a mentor to elementary school students. Elizabeth has been accepted to the University of Nevada where she will be major in in Neuroscience/Pre-med.
