Life Center Looking into to a Substandard Lunch

Meals on Wheels lunch questionable – manager will correct
Life Center Looking into to a Substandard Lunch
Meals on Wheels at the Pennington Life Center serves nearly 200 local seniors a day

It was a rough day today for Meals on Wheels recipients, one of whom, James Olsen posted on social media a photo of the meal he received that was less than savory.

“I’m grateful this was brought to my attention,” said senior center Manager, Jamie Lee, “there is no excuse, and I will find out what happened.”

She said she will be in the kitchen tomorrow when the food is being prepared.

According to Lee, her main concern at the Pennington Life Center is the Meals on Wheels program and that people feel safe and confident. “We want them to know we have their back, we will get them their food,” she said.

Currently, the senior center is short-staffed, and without a head cook. The kitchen staff that is on the job are preparing right at 400 meals every day. Nearly 200 of those go to the MOW recipients, 70 are being delivered to the senior center at the Fallon Paiute Shoshone Tribe, and a batch is frozen for the weekend deliveries. Every Friday MOW recipients receive three meals, one for Friday, and two to get them through the weekend.

Additionally, there are roughly 50 meals prepared for those who come in person to the dining room.

Lee said since she came on board, she has tripled the food order each week, going from roughly $2,000 each week to nearly $6,000 in recent weeks. “For instance, we are having fajitas and I just doubled the order for veggies so we make sure each serving has a half a cup of veggies and three ounces of meat.”

In spite of what Lee calls an anomaly with the MOW today, she regularly hears from people who attend the center in person for lunch in the dining room each day, that the meals are very good.

Pat Lee says she eats in the dining room and the food has been wonderful.

“We are trying to move forward, I don’t want anyone to be unhappy,” said Manager Lee, “that was unfortunate, and I am investigating.”

Where's the photo alluded to in the story? I want to see the substandard lunch or at least read a description of what it looked like.

The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses.
