County Announces Additional Services at Life Center Effective July 1

Author: File photo

As Churchill County seeks to increase service offerings for seniors in our community, Bus Scharmann started as the county’s interim manager for the Pennington Life Center today. He spent the morning meeting with Senior Coalition Board members and staff discussing the transition of services and jobs to the county.

In the short term, the employees will maintain employment with the Senior Coalition until job descriptions are approved by the Board of County Commissioners and positions are recruited, interviewed, and offered to the best candidates. It is the county’s assumption that many of the successful candidates will be those who have been serving in similar positions at the Life Center.

All current Life Center programs will be maintained moving beyond July 1 including congregate meals, Meals on Wheels, homemaker and other activities.

Starting July 1, Churchill County will introduce increased services including:

  • Health services
  • Access to resource officers who will provide support and information to help seniors in our community remain independent and active.
  • Life Center will open weekdays for morning coffee at 7 a.m.

The county is looking for every opportunity to expand usage and services at the Life Center. More announcements on increased services and offerings will be forthcoming.

The Life Center was built in 2017 as a joint project between the William N. Pennington Foundation, Senior Coalition, Churchill County, and the City of Fallon to support an active, positive lifestyle for our community’s senior population. Operational funding for this program has been provided jointly from Churchill County and the City of Fallon along with federally supported grant funds. These funding sources will remain the same moving forward under county management.

The Senior Coalition and Churchill County will continue to work closely together beyond July 1. The Coalition will serve as an advisory board to the operations of the Life Center and work cooperatively with the interim manager to identify and pursue private nonprofit funds to support specific expansion opportunities.

We thank the community for their support and understanding as we work together to increase services for Churchill County seniors.

One of my most favorite stories Paul told dated back to the late 60s or early 70s and it revolved around him killing a deer way out in the mountains. Naturally the deer ran down into a deep canyon and died. Knowing that it would take him forever to haul it out he devised an awesome plan. After preparing the deer he drove back to NAS Fallon and rustled up a SAR crew and they flew out and picked up the deer. Of course it was labeled as a training flight but what the hell in those days you could do that sort of thing. Rest in Peace my friend until we meet again!!Comment publication date: 4/11/24, 1:15 PMComment source: Obituary - LCDR Paul N PflimlinComment author: THughesComment text: So sad to hear.
