Pedestrian Fatality on Whitaker

NHP Investigating Fatal Crash on US-50 at Whitaker Lane On Friday, April 9, 2021, at approximately 7:16 p.m., Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers responded to a fatal crash involving a vehicle and two pedestrians on US-50 at Whitaker Lane.

Preliminary investigation shows that a white 1996 Ford pickup towing a flatbed trailer was westbound in the left lane on US-50 approaching the intersection of Whitaker Lane. Two pedestrians entered the crosswalk to cross US-50 heading south towards Whitaker Lane. The Ford pickup entered the intersection against the red traffic signal and struck both pedestrians.

One of the pedestrians (Anita Assam, an 80-year-old Palm Desert, California resident) was declared deceased at the scene.

This crash is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command West Multi-Disciplinary Investigation and Reconstruction Team (M.I.R.T.)
