Justice Court News

New River Township Justice Court Convened on March 24 with Judge Ben Trotter presiding.

James Fred Dahlke (in custody) appeared on Second Offense Domestic Battery charges. Dahlke claimed that he did not understand why he was in jail, the charges presented against him, or his rights as read by Judge Trotter. He also stated that he was blind and could not read the information as presented. Dahlke requested that Judge Trotter address his custodial status. The Court could not consider the request, however, until Dahlke is legally arraigned. Churchill County Public Defender (CCPD) Jacob Sommer was present via Zoom video conferencing and was appointed to represent Dahlke, but he requested to meet with Sommer in person before continuing. Dahlke also reported that he is currently homeless and living in a shelter. According to Chief Deputy District Attorney Lane Mills, Dahlke is currently on probation for harassment and has a criminal history that includes other violent charges. He was arrested on March 21.

Shawn Tosh Hartzell appeared from the Churchill County Jail via Zoom on charges of sexual assault. Churchill CCPD Jacob Sommer was appointed to represent Hartzell. A status hearing was set for Aril 8 to allow Sommer to review the case before proceeding.

Roland Zamora (in custody) was arraigned on two theft-related charges. According to the criminal complaint, on August 4, Zamora unlawfully entered Kent’s Supply at 260 N. Maine Street and committed grand larceny. He was charged with Burglary of a Business, a Category C Felony that carries 1-5 years in prison. Zamora was also charged with Grand Larceny of Personal Goods and Property, a Category D Felony that carries 1-4 years. It is alleged that he stole $1,200- $5,000 in tools and other items. CCPD Sommer was appointed to represent Zamora, and Judge Trotter agreed to release Zamora on his own recognizance (OR) under Court Services Supervision. A status hearing is set for April 8.
