History Reviews -- History of Comedy

History Reviews -- History of Comedy

A CNN documentary that got a second life on HBO Max, History of Comedy is an interesting series that examines all forms of the comedic industry. The series begins with the birth of live comedy with a look at the vaudeville and Burlesque theatre. From there, we learn about word play with Lenny Bruce and George Carlin, and about groundbreaking women like Phyllis Diller and Carol Leifer. If stand-up comedy is not for you, there are episodes about sketch comedy shows, satire, and the newest generation just breaking into fame.

My favorite thing about this series is the level of history it shares. It is perfect for those interested only in watching good jokes – or for the evolution through history for those obsessed like my friends and I.

Additionally, a comedy documentary is not usually a medium that is widely watched or enjoyed.  Most comedy documentaries cover single people, like the icons John Belushi or George Carlin. Of course, they deserve every accolade we give to them for their work. But this series casts such a wide net that it has become a great interesting history lesson for everyone.

We reached out to the writer/submitter and got this info back...hope it's helpful. PBM: Pharmacy Benefit Managers are pharmacies that are owned by insurance companies. (CVS is one.) They negotiate with drug makers to get reduced pricing for medications, but they historically have not passed along those savings to patients. https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/pharmacy-benefit-managers-staff-report.pdf MFN: Most Favored Nation pricing is a policy that means a country agrees to offer the same trade concessions (like tariffs or price reductions) to all member nations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). When applied to pharmaceuticals, it could disrupt global access, deter innovation, and obscure the deeper systemic issues in American health care. https://petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2025/05/22/the-global-risks-of-americas-most-favored-nation-drug-pricing-policy/Comment publication date: 6/23/25, 7:47 AMComment source: L E T T E R TO THE EDITOR
