As COVID-19 continues to take a toll across the state, Churchill County is seeing a rise in positive cases as well. Numbers released yesterday by county staff show a total of 247 active cases with 12 people currently hospitalized with the virus. There have been seven deaths. Numbers continue to fluxuate as data is clarified and confirmed between various agencies involved in reporting test results.
The Churchill County School District is reporting positive cases throughout the district, with one high school staff member, one Numa Elementary student, and one Lahontan Elementary staff member added to their count yesterday. The district plans to remain open at this time, with students still attending in person. There are many students exercising the choice for online/virtual classes.
Logos Christian Academy reported yesterday that they have one staff member testing positive and their Pre-K class will be in quarantine until after the Thanksgiving holiday.
Oasis Academy currently has one student and two staff members positive for COVID. Because the school falls under the State Public Charter School Authority, guidelines have kicked in that put limitations on the building capacity when the county is in a mitigation level, which is currently the case. The Oasis K-4th graders are meeting in person, as is the high school on an A/B day schedule. The fifth through eighth grades are currently being held virtually and are expected to return to in person classes on January 4th.
According to County Manager Jim Barbee, Highland Village/Manor has had an outbreak of positive cases as well. “We are communicating with them and assisting them, trying to get them PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) which is one of the struggles they are currently having,” he said.
According to Barbee, there have been three deaths in the county since the recent increase, bringing the total to seven. The average age of those three deaths is 81 years old.
The Churchill County testing data does include the school district, nursing homes, the Fallon Tribe, and NAS Fallon numbers, with all test results being reported to the state.
Free drive through testing is available at the Fair Grounds on Tuesdays and Thursdays. However, due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, next week the testing will be Tuesday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Please call 423-6695, option 2 to make an appointment, and leave your name and number and staff will return the call.
