Commentary -- Viviane on the election

Commentary -- Viviane on the election
Viviane Ugalde is a recent University of Nevada grad and staff writer for The Fallon Post

As I type this in time to be printed, we are yet to know who the next president of the United States will be.

Although many news outlets and election officials said the election count would take multiple days due to an influx of mail-in ballots from coronavirus precautions... who knew we would be here?

While I write, I have watched all major news outlets for almost twenty-eight hours, and five states are still too close to call, with Nevada being one of those still undecided. I never thought I’d watch the election for the same number of days I watched the World Series or World Cup.

As if this election was not already crazy, being held during a national pandemic and with two divisive candidates, the craziest part of the election was the statements made by cable news journalists. By 2:30 am on Wednesday morning, most political pundits were discussing what would happen if the election were tied, rather than what would happen if multiple states had recounts.  By 2:30 pm on Wednesday, the same political pundits were shouting about what senate campaigns were more interesting than what was happening in Pennsylvania or Arizona. Cable news will never stop pushing sensationalism.

While this election season was unprecedent, confusing, and stressful, it was nice to have some semblance of normality in light of the virus. Hopefully – and some project – the election will be finalized by the end of the week at the latest.

This election will definitely go down in the history books and stay in our memories for years to come.

Comment author: Claude EzzellComment text: Paul was one of the most manifest men I have ever met. He was a good friends with my Dad and always had an entertaining story for the occasion. One of my most favorite stories Paul told dated back to the late 60s or early 70s and it revolved around him killing a deer way out in the mountains. Naturally the deer ran down into a deep canyon and died. Knowing that it would take him forever to haul it out he devised an awesome plan. After preparing the deer he drove back to NAS Fallon and rustled up a SAR crew and they flew out and picked up the deer. Of course it was labeled as a training flight but what the hell in those days you could do that sort of thing. Rest in Peace my friend until we meet again!!Comment publication date: 4/11/24, 1:15 PMComment source: Obituary - LCDR Paul N PflimlinComment author: THughesComment text: So sad to hear.
