Fresh, Local Produce Available Now

There is still time this week to get your order in for the Fallon Food Hub’s pop-up food box at https://www.harvie.farm/farm-stand/fallon-food-hub and pick up your fresh, local produce on Friday. Orders must be placed by Wednesdays at 3:00 p.m., and pick up is Friday at Lattin Farms from noon to 6:00 p.m., located at 1955 McLean Road.

The Fallon Food Hub is alive and well and is continuing to provide the community with fresh produce grown by local farmers while working on designs for the new brick and mortar facility that will be located at the corner of South Maine and Fairview Street.

The normal schedule for the seasonal boxes is from May 18th through September 28th and the winter box traditionally runs from November through the end of March. Executive Director Kelli Kelly says they are able to continue offering the pop-up boxes between the seasons because local farmers are still growing produce, and with restrictions on travel right now she isn’t taking her normal break to visit her sister back east. “We normally provide local produce to the Northern Nevada community for 40 weeks during the year,” she said, “and here we are still delivering.”

According to Kelly, two weeks ago the farm stand delivered just over 40 boxes and last week there were 56 customers – half of those go to Reno to various customers there.

The subscription farm boxes are hugely popular and over the years Kelly has seen over 250 individual customers who have at one point been subscribers to the fresh, local produce service. “We are currently delivering the farm boxes to subscribers in Sparks, Reno, and Carson City, and during the regular farm box season our Churchill County farmers are providing food across Northern Nevada to 1,133 individual subscribers.”

Kelly says the operators of the Harvie ordering system that the Food Hub uses for the subscription boxes, there has been a 300% increase in the local food box deliveries during the COVID pandemic.

To place an order, follow this link and create an account before ordering. This week customers can order asparagus, slicing tomatoes, green garlic, among other fresh produce. In addition, the Farm Stand is offering a Virtual Seedling Sale with plant starts available for order until May 6th and they will be available for pick up at Lattin Farms on May 9th.

Comment author: Patti Cole Comment text: Marie will be forever treasured in memories. The memories remain of a soft-spoken, seemingly unassuming but determined individual who absolutely knew what path she wanted to take in life, and followed it. Her instinctive reactions, which highlighted her steadfast level of love and caring for her family, friends and all living things found in nature, hold lessons for us all. An unexpected splash of her self-deprecating humor, coupled with uncanny timing, will always bring a smile. For me, Marie lives on in the sighting of a Black-crowned night heron in the tules, the bloom of a beautiful spring flower and, most poetically, in the struggle of wildlife photographers handling their very large camera lenses.
