by Carol Lloyd —
Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson
This story, set in 2001, opens with 16 year-old Melody’s coming out party. Her mother never had a party like this and the mother-daughter relationship is strained for a variety of reasons.
And so begins the tale of these 3 generations as they weave their way through the intricacies of life. The Tulsa Race Massacre and 9/11 profoundly affect the family as does gentrification, education, and parenthood. Through each character’s story universal truths are revealed. Truths about love, friendship, and how life is lived.
There is a lot of living packed into this little book and it is one of the best I’ve read in a long time.
Carol Lloyd is the Churchill County librarian and has been on great adventures during most of January. We have missed her book reviews.
