Hand-carved jack-o'-lanterns lit up the evening sky at Lattin Farms on Saturday, Oct. 24, as the farm's towering pumpkin display glowed during its annual Fall Festival.
The pumpkins, featuring everything from traditional jack-o'-lantern faces to elaborate designs and messages, were arranged on a historic wooden hay derrick, creating a colorful display against the darkening sky. One side spelled out “Lattin Farms,” while another featured “USA 250,” recognizing the nation's 250th anniversary.
Long before it became a centerpiece of the fall celebration, the derrick served a practical purpose in the Lahontan Valley's agricultural history. Hay derricks were once used to build haystacks, and the mobile wooden structures were moved from field to field during haymaking.
According to information displayed at Lattin Farms, the derricks were used in the valley from the late 1800s into the 1960s.
Today, the old farming equipment has found a new purpose, holding rows of glowing pumpkins that celebrate both Halloween and the valley's agricultural heritage.
The illuminated tower is one of the seasonal attractions at Lattin Farms' Fall Festival, bringing a little Halloween magic to a piece of local farming history.
