The Churchill County Sheriff’s Office reported 10 traffic stops and nine citations during two three-hour pedestrian safety enforcement events on Oct. 13 and 19 as part of Nevada’s Joining Forces program.
Eight citations were for failing to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, and one was for a cellphone violation. The figures cover six hours of local enforcement, not the full statewide pedestrian safety campaign, which runs Oct. 10-31.
Patrol deputies conducted the operations with three additional Sheriff’s Office employees who acted as pedestrians. The events were intended to increase driver awareness and improve pedestrian safety.
Sheriff Lee Orozco said the department’s participation in Joining Forces focuses on dangerous driving behaviors, crash prevention, and public education.
The Sheriff’s Office received grant funding to participate in Joining Forces, a statewide program involving 38 law enforcement agencies. The program runs from October 2026 through September 2027 and supports additional enforcement targeting impaired and distracted driving, speeding, seat belt violations, and pedestrian, motorcycle, and bicycle safety.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages pedestrians to use sidewalks and marked crosswalks when available and to wear bright or reflective clothing after dark. Drivers should watch for pedestrians, especially near schools and residential neighborhoods, obey speed limits, and avoid distractions.
Joining Forces is funded through grants from the Nevada Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. More information is available at ZeroFatalitiesNV.com.
