I love fall.
I love fall in Northern Nevada especially well.
As I travel across the state to our newspaper communities, I’m just happy. The air is crisp and clean, the trees are starting to turn to gold, and as Ralphie says in “A Christmas Story,” “All is right with the world, and my joy is at its zenith.”
Maybe that’s part of why I love these drives so much. Every town has something going on: a school project, a football game, somebody opening a business, or neighbors showing up to help. There’s plenty to worry about, of course. We put that in the paper, too. But getting out and seeing people reminds me how much good there is to notice. Fall makes me want to roll down the window and pay a little more attention.
When I was little, fall was always a restart. School still started after Labor Day and brought with it the excitement of new beginnings, and that feeling is still associated with the softening of the seasons for me. Fresh and new and bursting with anticipation. The long, hot summer draws to a close, and it’s time to enjoy all the fresh activities that come with the change.
There’s also something magical about the moon this time of year. Every evening, as it moves across the southern sky in that perfect arc, brighter each evening, we get closer to cool nights and cozy weather. Even at half-full, the light beams a spotlight across the yard, and the bunnies play in their pen until way past bedtime.
So while we gear up for the holidays and enjoy these beautiful autumn days, we’ll always be right here…
…Keeping you Posted.
