Students at Veritas Preparatory School recently enjoyed a day of discovery as they celebrated Bee Day. The highlight of the celebration was a presentation by Lori Souba of Silver Circle Honey. Souba shared her knowledge of beekeeping and introduced students to the fascinating world of honeybees. Through educational displays, a sample hive, and real honey, students gained a firsthand look at how these remarkable insects live and work.
During the presentation, students learned how bees cooperate within a colony, collect nectar from flowers, and transform it into honey. One of the most exciting moments came when students searched the hive for the queen bee, identified by a small blue marking on her back. The activity gave students an opportunity to observe the organization and teamwork that make a honeybee colony so remarkable.
Of course, no Bee Day would be complete without a taste of honey! Students eagerly sampled the sweet product of the bees' hard work, connecting what they had learned during the presentation with something they could experience for themselves.
Bee Day also provided an opportunity to reinforce the biblical worldview that is central to education at Veritas. As students examined the intricate organization of a beehive and the relationship between bees and flowering plants, they were encouraged to recognize the wisdom and purpose evident in God's creation.
The celebration was a wonderful example of how learning can extend beyond textbooks and traditional classroom instruction. By welcoming a local expert and giving students opportunities to observe, ask questions, create, and taste, Veritas helped transform an ordinary science lesson into an experience students will remember.
By the end of the day, students had gained a greater appreciation for honeybees, a better understanding of pollination, and perhaps a new favorite sweet treat.
