The Churchill County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of human skeletal remains in a remote area approximately 15 miles northeast of Fallon.
According to Sheriff Lee Orozco, individuals riding ATVs discovered the remains on Oct. 15 and reported them to authorities. Investigators responded to the area, secured the scene, and began an investigation. The remains were transported to the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office for examination and positive identification.
Orozco said preliminary findings have not indicated foul play, although the investigation remains open pending the medical examiner’s findings.
Personal items found with the remains have provided investigators with a tentative identification. The Sheriff’s Office has contacted individuals believed to be the deceased person’s next of kin, but a positive identification has not yet been made.
The Sheriff’s Office will withhold the person’s identity until identification is confirmed and family notifications are completed. Additional information will be released as the investigation progresses.
