This past week, the Lowry High School girls soccer team celebrated its seniors and came away with a much-needed split of matches against Churchill County and Fernley.
The Buckaroos made their way down the hill and onto Jerry Tobin Field on Thursday, Oct. 8, to take on Churchill County, who sat in second place in the Northern 3A East.
Under the lights for senior night, the Buckaroos Julie Chavez tied the contest at 1-1 in the 29th minute off an assist from Ava Swensen. At that time both squads had a number of excellent scoring chances.
The Greenwave came back three minutes later to lead 2-1 at halftime and added two more goals in the second half to win 4-1 and complete the season-sweep of the Buckaroos. The sweep is important in playoff tiebreaker scenarios.
After a day off, Lowry was back home to take on Fernley on a windy day that gave both teams fits. The Buckaroos netted one goal in each half. Chavez found the back of the net once again, with assists from Adalyn Entwistle and Swensen.
Allyson Barajas stopped all six shots on goal she saw.
Elko and Churchill County are the top two teams in the East and Truckee and South Tahoe have the top seeds in the West. They would automatically qualify for the Northern 3A Regional Championships. Lowry, Spring Creek, Fernley and Incline hold the final four spots.
The opening round of the tournament is played at home sites and the semifinals and finals are in Winnemucca on Oct. 30-31.
Lowry hosts Spring Creek on Oct. 20, at 3:45 p.m. and conclude the regular season on Oct. 23, at Elko, also at 3:45 p.m.
