A year after winning just one game, the Churchill County High School boys soccer team is in position to battle for a postseason berth.
A 5-1 loss to Elko last Friday and a 1-1 tie with West Wendover on Saturday has the Greenwave in fourth place in the Northern 3A East, and they stand sixth in the combined regional standings with the East and West Division. Fallon is 2-4-1 in the East and has 21 points in the regional standings, which places them sixth.
The eight teams with the most points in the region qualify for the league tournament, with the top four teams hosting first found games against Nos. 5-8 seeds.
The Greenwave put up a stiff fight against Elko. The Indians scored four goals in the first half, but the Greenwave held them to one in the second half, while getting one of their own from Kyle Shawcroft.
Fallon goalie Caiden Nietz faced 16 shots on goal and made 11 saves.
Saturday the Greenwave scored first against West Wendover but had to settle for the 1-1 tie after the Wolverines knotted things up in the second half. Keaton Jaques scored for Fallon, which mustered six shots on goal but couldn’t get another one past the West Wendover goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, Nietz faced 13 shots and was able to stop 12 of them.
The Greenwave will try to improve their positioning this week, playing at Lowry at 6:15 p.m. Thursday and at Spring Creek at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, before hosting Fernley in the regular season finale next Friday.
