At its most recent meeting, the NIAA Board of Control voted to rescind a previous motion made in the spring 2026 board meeting to sanction spirit (including competitive cheer and competitive dance) for the 2027-28 school year.
In a press release, the NIAA stated the item will come back at a future meeting for additional discussion and possible action. Additionally, the Board of Control voted to continue the established state championship for spirit (competitive cheer and competitive dance) through the 2027-28 school year.
Establishing a state championship for cheer, allows schools to continue to operate their sideline and competitive cheer programs, as well as school-based and competitive dance programs, as they have previously, in accordance with current NIAA regulations.
There are no changes to existing rules, policies, or regulations for the
2027-28 school year.
The NIAA encourages member schools to review NAC 385B.550 through NAC 385B.566 for current regulations.
