Fallon claimed the first round of this season’s two rivalry games with Fernley in girls soccer last Saturday.
Evie Johnson and Zayrah Miranda scored goals two minutes apart in the second half to lift the Greenwave to the 2-0 victory. Johnson broke a scoreless tie with the first goal of the game, off an assist from Kortnie Simper in the 56th minute. Johnson then assisted on the goal by Miranda in the 58th minute.
Stat tracking showed that Fallon had the ball for 70 percent of possession time compared to 30 percent for Fernley, and the Greenwave attempted 32 shots, including 15 on goal. Fernley goalie Lilliana Perez made 14 saves.
Fernley attempted six shots, and five of them were on goal. Fallon goalie Shaylee Orduna made five saves.
“Fernley continues to improve every year as their town’s population continues to grow quickly,” Fallon assistant coach Neill Tunstead said. “They play a strong off the ball defensive style.”
The win improved Fallon’s record to 3-1 in the Northern 3A East and 7-3-1 overall, while Fernley dropped to 0-4 in the East and 4-9-1 overall. But both teams remain in the top eight overall in the Northern 3A.
Fallon is second in the East and fourth overall with 35 total points in the standings, while Fernley is fifth in the East but is eighth in the region with 20 points, comfortably ahead of Wooster, which is ninth with seven points.
The top eight teams qualify for the region tournament, with the top four hosting first-round games. The semifinals and finals will be at Lowry.
Truckee and South Tahoe lead the region with 48 points, while Elko is third with 38.
“Great to turn the corner into the second half of the season in such a strong position in our league,” Fallon’s Tunstead said. “The team looks fantastic; we will continue to be strong and sharp as we go deeper into the season.”
Both teams lay just one game this week, at Lowry. Fallon is scheduled to face the Buckaroos at 5:45 p.m. Thursday. Fernley travels to Lowry for a game at 11:45 a.m. Saturday.
