After beating Lowry last Wednesday for their second league win of the season, the Churchill County High School volleyball team went 2-2 Saturday in the Gridley Invitational Volleyball Tournament in Gridley, CA.
The Greenwave defeated Lowry 25-13, 25-16, 25-23 on Sept. 23 behind 17 kills by Raegan Johnson and a balanced defensive effort. Layla Walker had 10 dis from the back row, while Kalaya Downs added nine, Hayden Dooley had seven and seven other players had at least two. Downs also had 21 assists.
Saturday the Greenwave won the first two matches in the Gridley Tournament before losing the next two.
They started with a 26-24, 25-14 win over Argonaut (Jackson, CA). Johnson had 13 kills and three blocks, Downs had 18 assists and walker led the defense with 12 digs.
In the second match, Fallon beat North Tahoe 25-20, 23-25, 15-9. Johnson had 22 kills and Audrey Fruzza added nine, Walker had 18 digs and Downs had 30 assists and nine digs.
In the third match, the Greenwave lost to Gridley, 25-23, 25-21. Johnson was strong at the net again with 15 kills, Walker had 20 digs and Downs dished out 19 assists.
In the final match, Woodland Christian beat Fallon 25-18, 25-18. Fruzza and Johnson each had four kills and Downs had 11 assists and 10 digs.
The Greenwave was scheduled to play in Fernley Tuesday night, then host Elko and Spring Creek this weekend, with the Elko match at 6 p.m. Friday and Spring Creek at noon Saturday.
“We’re looking forward to a big week of league play with three important games,” coach Tristin Johnson said. “We’re playing well and everyone is getting more comfortable with their roles. Should be an exciting week.”
