Elko scored four times in the second half last Friday to hold off the Churchill County High School girls soccer team in the first game of its road trip last week, but the Greenwave bounced back Saturday to beat Spring Creek 4-2.
Goal by Karlie Simper in the 13th minute and Zayrah Miranda in the 24th had the Greenwave leading 2-1 at the half, but Elko scored in the 43rd, 48th and 65th minutes to move ahead 4-2. Simper’s second goal in the 66th minute pulled Fallon within 4-3, but Elko scored an insurance goal in the 76th minute and held on for the win.
The Greenwave had eight shots on goal to Lowry’s 17. Goalkeeper Shaylee Orduna made 12 saves and both Evie Johnson and Miranda had one assist.
Saturday at Spring Creek the Greenwave built a 4-0 lead then held odd a late Spartan rally. Miranda, Kortnie Simper, Johnson and Kaena Willaims each had a goal for Fallon. The Spartans got on the board in the 71st minute and scored again in the final minute.
Fallon had 28 total shots, 14 on goal, while Spring Creek managed 29 shots and 18 on goal, but Orduna made 16 saves.
Assistant coach Neill Tunstead said it was an enjoyable week in terms of the level of challenge Elko and Spring Creek presented. He also said the games were closer than the scores reflect and looks forward to hosting them both in Fallon.
“The ladies traveled well and played even better,” he said. “Great ambassadors of their school both on and off the field.”
The Greenwave is scheduled to host Fernley at 11:45 a.m. and go to Lowry next Thursday for a game at 5:45 p.m.
Boys soccer: Fallon lost 2–1 to Lowry last Friday and 3–0 to Spring Creek last Saturday. The Greenwave play Thursday at North Tahoe at 3:45 p.m. and Saturday at Fernley at 11:45 a.m.
