This week, our kindergarten class wrapped up its letter “R” unit with an unforgettable Rodeo Day celebration. After spending time learning about the rich history of western cowboys — from their traditions to the tools of their trade — our little cowpokes were ready to put their knowledge into action.

The day kicked off with a cowboy breakfast, where students practiced serving themselves independently and using good table manners. And, of course, before taking their first bite, they paused to say grace and thank God for their meal.

Then it was time for the rodeo stations.

Station 1 — Horseback Riding
The generous McCorkle family brought their very own horse for our students to ride, providing an experience that was a true highlight of the day. One kindergartner summed it up perfectly: “This is the best day ever.”

Station 2 — Horse Training
Students learned about the work and patience involved in training a horse and had the opportunity to experience a little of what it takes to work with these remarkable animals.

Station 3 — Cattle Roundup
Our little cowboys and cowgirls put their rodeo skills to the test as they collected their “cattle” and rounded them up into the corral. Yee-haw!

Station 4 — Cowboy Scavenger Hunt
Students searched for and identified familiar cowboy gear, including boots, spurs, saddles, ropes, and belt buckles. They then explained how each item is used, providing a fun and interactive way to review everything they had learned throughout the unit.

Rodeo Day was a wonderful combination of learning, hands-on experiences, and time spent celebrating together. From practicing independence and good manners at breakfast to demonstrating their knowledge at the rodeo stations, our kindergarten students had plenty of opportunities to put what they had learned into practice.

The day also brought to mind the words of Ecclesiastes 3:13: “That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil — this is the gift of God.”

On Rodeo Day, our little cowboys and cowgirls did just that—learning, working, laughing, and enjoying the blessings God has given them.
